10 Tips to Make the Best Out of Your Bridal Consultation

10 Tips to Make the Best Out of Your Bridal Consultation

Here’s how to make the most out of your bridal consultation.

  1. Do some research before your appointment

Explore your options. Have an inspo board on Instagram or Pinterest to organize and guide us to understand your style. Take screenshots if you must and bring them along with you. We do not accept links to your inspo boards for security reasons. Research on the bridal codes that apply to your culture and church and share these with your bridal stylist and consultant.

  1. Have an idea of what kind of wedding you want

Take some time to consider the type of wedding you want. Close your eyes and think with your mind’s eye; envision what you look like walking down the aisle, throwing the bouquet, celebrating with your entourage, with friends and family, taking pictures with your husband and loved ones. What are you wearing? What unconventional yet perfect-for-you functions should your dress be capable of? (Maybe a detachable with pockets to keep your vows, for example). What is the perfect order of events? Something simple? An extravaganza?

Write it all down to share with us during your consultation.

  1. Have a budget in mind

This is very important. Have a budget for everything including your gown. Put aside an extra 10%-20% of your gown budget just in case. This will prevent any financial hiccups when working toward your big day.

  1. Have a schedule dedicated to your appointment

Sharing ideas for your custom design can take one to four hours so brace yourself. To avoid feeling overwhelmed when brainstorming for your bridal gown and entourage, focus on a single appointment. After booking online or via call or visit, call a day before hand to indicate your continued interest in the appointment. If you want a calmer and carefully paced appointment, weekdays are best as weekends are usually spent getting brides ready for their big day.

  1. Fill the consultation form online

The consultation form is provided on our website’s booking page to help us prepare adequately for your appointment.

  1. Book your appointment early

There is usually a long queue of orders lined up. You want to get in line and on time to save you the trouble of last-minute changes and alterations. It may seem bizzare and out of character to drop in unannounced for your appointment. Call beforehand for your enquiries and book well ahead of time (preferable very early and well ahead of your wedding date).

  1. Keep an open mind/Don't Rule Anything Out Just Yet

Although you must come prepared, don’t rule anything out yet. Our custom designs could include silhouettes that aren’t typically your style but you might be surprised! We work hand-in-hand with clients, advising on styles that would suit you perfectly.

Extra tip: Wedding dresses come in different shades of white (Ivory, Champagne, and Diamond White to name a few). We test samples of these shades to know which shade best compliments your complexion.

  1. Get measured in-person and request a fitting at most one month to your wedding day, if not earlier.

Even if you plan to lose weight before the wedding, it is safer to sew with your true size than to have a dress done in a size smaller than your current size. Here's why; it’s easier to alter a bigger dress to fit you than to fix a smaller size to a bigger size.

Extra tip: Don’t forget to wear nude undergarments to your fittings. SugarKane offers 4 different fittings; the first one to get your feedback, the second one to check if your size may have changed, the third fitting is done after detailing on your gown has been completed and the final fitting is for when you are ready to walk down the aisle.

  1. The fewer people you bring to your appointment, the better.

Making decisions with more than three people can be daunting and will prolong the process. We advise you bring along your mother and a close friend to your in-person consultation. If you must, choose people who know and understand your taste and style.

  1. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind

Stay true to yourself, no matter what others say. Be open minded but don’t go against your values and desires for your wedding day. Speak your mind even if you don’t want to come off as too demanding. It’s your special day. If you are paying, it’s more cause to be straight to the point with your dislikes and likes. If not, there may be anxiety and tension when finding the balance between what you want and what family wants. Speak up for yourself and let whoever is assisting you in decision making know that you are willing to meet them halfway if that’s what it takes to get what you want. Compromises are not uncommon in such situations.

Although designing your one-of-a-kind gown requires a lot of time and decision making, have fun with it. Tapping into joy will set the tone for your entire wedding. What’s more exciting that tailoring excitement into this memorable part of your life?
